What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
From 2 April 2025, citizens from countries that don’t usually need a visa to visit the UK – including the EU, EEA and Switzerland – will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling.
This new entry requirement is part of the UK’s updated border system and is designed to keep things secure while making short visits easier to manage.
Who needs an ETA?
You’ll need an ETA if you’re a citizen of:
The EU, EEA or Switzerland
The USA, Canada, Australia and certain Commonwealth countries
A transit passenger passing through the UK who needs to go through border control
If you already have a valid UK visa, residence permit, settled/pre-settled status, or indefinite leave to remain – you don’t need to apply for an ETA. Irish citizens are also exempt.
What does the ETA allow you to do?
With a valid ETA, you can:
Visit the UK for up to 6 months
Travel for tourism, business, short study courses, or family visits
Use it for multiple entries during the 2-year validity
However, it doesn’t allow you to work or live permanently in the U
How do I apply?
It’s super simple and 100% online. You can apply via:
The official UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android)
⚠️ Be careful with unofficial sites – some charge much more for the same thing.
How long does it take?
Most applications are processed within a few hours, but it’s best to apply at least 3 working days before you travel, just in case.
Why has the UK introduced the ETA?
The UK wants to strengthen its border control system while keeping things smooth for short-term visitors. It’s similar to travel authorisations already used in the US (ESTA) and Australia (ETA).
